Pricing Catalog: Bighorn Sheep: Every bit as much as I enjoy the pronghorn, and the photographic opportunities they give me, so too I enjoy the bighorn sheep. On several occasions I've been fortunate enough to have spent literally days at a time with them. I've followed them, walked with them, sat with them when they've bedded, and even slept with them only to begin again the next morning. I've found that within a fairly short period of time, if I'm cautious and controlled in my movements, they'll soon ignore me. My wife, Annette, and I were in northern Alberta, Canada a couple of years ago. I spotted a band of 5 rams a couple of hundred yards away. Annette stayed put, I began moving in their direction. Ten minutes or so later I realized the sheep were walking towards me. I sat down quietly on a rocky outcropping and waited, the rams came straight in feeding as they came. They knew fully well I was there, they simply didn't care. When they'd gotten to within no more than perhaps thirty yards one laid down facing me and gently chewing his cud. The others spread out in a semicircle and they too lay down. I waved at Annette and she slowly approached. The rams paid little attention. For the next couple of hours Annette and I mostly watched. Finally the group got up and slowly worked away from us. Time like that spent in the company of such magnificent animals is something neither of us will ever forget. |
