Throughout the months of September and October the
western rockies, in most areas, resonate with the sounds
of the elk rut as bulls bugle to bring in the females
and warn away their rival males. It's said their bugles
can be heard for up to a mile away. Going into the rut
is when the bulls are at their peak of physical
fitness. Coming out of it many are spent and weary, in
too impoverished shape to make it through the long
arduous winter ahead.
