Pricing Catalogue: Whitetail Deer: Due to increased natural mortality in whitetail bucks as opposed to does, as well as structuring of hunting seasons, and hunter's preference for large antlered animals, fully mature whitetail bucks are as rare as hen's teeth throughout most of their range. Thus the pricing structure you see here.
Many years ago now, Leonard Lee Rue wrote a magazine
article in which he attempted to explain why
mortality rates were (are) much higher in male
whitetail
fawns than females. He used words and phrases such
as "adventurous", "rambunctious", "high spirited",
"inquisitive", etc. A month or two after the
magazine came out a lady wrote in to tell Mr. Rue
that he could just as easily have described the
increased mortality rates of the young males as due
to stupidity in comparison to their females
cohorts. I don't know if males are any less bright
than females, however, I do know it's a fact that
throughout their lives male whitetails die at a much
higher rate than females. The lower prices attached
to these female photos is not in any way meant to
infer a lessened admiration on my behalf for females
of the species instead it reflects the fact there
are simply far more of them to photograph, hence
they're easier to find.
Throughout my life I have prided myself on my ability to "reach out and touch the animal". When hunting I never considered myself "a shooter", instead my interest lie in getting as close to an animal as possible, without disturbing it. Hence I take special pride in just how many photos I have of bedded animals. As I pride myself in catching bedded animals. I also pride myself in discovering concealed young. I've spent many hours and walked many miles to find spring time young, as these photos demonstrate.
